From Making Saves to Making Deals
My father-in-law, Mike Liut, is a true role model for adaptiveness and transformation in business.
After a professional goaltending career that spanned fifteen years, including 5 for the St. Louis Blues (where he won the Lester B Pearson Award and still holds team records for Games Played and Wins) he could have retired and played golf. Instead, in his late-30’s, Mike balanced law school with a full-time job at the Players Association and then started up his own sports management company that was eventually acquired by Octagon where he now runs it’s hockey division.
Last night, 6 Blues players that Mike and his team of agents represent - Patrick Maroon, Vladimir Tarasenko, Jordan Binnington, David Perron, Robert Bortuzzo and Alexander Steen - made history by helping the franchise win it's first-ever Stanley Cup championship. A victory made more poignant by the full-circle nature of the fact that they won it for the city where he met his wife, started his family and laid the foundation for a rich personal and professional life that continues to evolve and impress.
Mike is excellent example for anyone willing to put in the work of re-skilling and starting again, at an age when most are settling in, to launch a successful second act.
